Fall from height to lead to damages claim?

Serious injuries sustained by two employees during an accident at work may lead to them seeking compensation.

Spencer Gosney and Matthew Brewer were working as subcontractors on a project at premises owned by GlaxoSmithKline - an organisation with more than 96,500 employees worldwide - in the forest of Dean in August 2009 when they got hurt.

The duo were building a concrete core at the factory and fell a distance of eight metres to the ground below when a temporary structure they were using collapsed.

Mr Gosney sustained a head injury as well as severe internal bruising, while his colleague fractured his pelvis and hip and has subsequently still not been able to work again.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive established that the men's employer was liable for the accident and Sue Adsett of the body commented: "It is vital all work is properly planned and checked in order to prevent or reduce the impact of falls."
