Thief ordered to pay compensation

A carer who stole from the man he was supposed to be looking after has been ordered to pay compensation.

Dannie Hannant, 38, took £4,000 from the 65-year-old man he helped on a daily basis.

As a result, he has been ordered to pay costs of £500, as well as a compensation fee of more than £1,000.

He has also been given a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Fran Mitchell, detective inspector of Sussex Police - which is governed by independent body Sussex Police Authority - said: "The sentence that Dannie Hannant received reflects the seriousness of the offences that he committed whilst working in a position of trust as a carer for an elderly disabled man."

It was pointed out the conviction should send a clear message to anyone in such a situation that theft from people who are vulnerable will not be tolerated.

The prosecution came following an investigation by the East Sussex Adult Protection Team.
