War veteran receives compensation from council

A former soldier has received a compensation settlement from a local authority after a motorcycling accident left him with a serious back injury.

According to Bideford People, Gulf war veteran Graham Mills took legal action against Devon County Council - a body with a gross budget of £1.3 billion and led by Councillor John Hart - for the life-changing injuries he suffered in Bideford in February 2009.

Mr Mills was riding his motorcycle down Abbotsham Road and drove through what he thought was a puddle, but actually hit a deep pothole that threw him over the handlebars of his vehicle.

The 45-year-old - who served in the army for 15 years - landed on his coccyx and had to undergo surgery because he was unable to walk more than 20 metres.

He told the news source this left him depressed and meant he had to close down his communications business.

"I was so used to being active and it was all taken away from me," Mr Mills added.
