Workplace accident leads to man being awarded £5,500 in damages
A man who suffered a severe broken bone on his hand in a workplace accident has been awarded £5,500 in compensation for his injuries.
Mr Ian Castle of Grimsby had his thumb crushed during an incident while he was working for P A Dunwell Transport Limited in a situation that was deemed to have been caused by the company's lack of training sessions and negligence to ensure that his working environment was safe and fit for purpose.
The employee - who is a member of workers union GMB, which has around 600,000 members across all sectors nationwide - had a roof door of his lorry fall down on him suddenly, resulting in his thumb being crushed against a lever.
Mr Castle explained that the event ripped his thumb off and ended with him requiring stitches as well as the bone being shattered.
He went on to state that he had to then return to work before the injury had fully healed because his "unsympathetic" employer would not allow him additional sick leave.
