Workplace accident leads to £13,000 fine
A workplace accident which left a man with a severe head injury has resulted in his employees being fined £13,000.
Alan Hind, a 28-year-old man from Scotland, was helping to destroy an industrial building at a site in the town in northern England when the roof of the structure collapsed.
During the incident, which occurred in February 2008, Mr Hind fell some six metres onto a concrete floor and was left with his skull fractured in 16 places, brain damage and a broken jaw.
Furthermore, the claimant is now blind in his left eye and deaf in his left ear, meaning that he has been permanently affected by the incident.
The Health and Safety Executive - which acts as an independent watchdog and attempts to ensure that workplaces across the country are safe and fit for purpose - prosecuted Robert and Eric Murray of Murray Structures and the duo have been ordered to pay £13,000 after being found to be liable for the accident.
