Worker may seek compensation over head injury

news image A worker who sustained a head injury as a result of an accident may seek compensation.

In July 2008, the individual - who did not wish to be named - was performing his role at Repair Protection and Maintenance (RPM) near Selby when he was caught up in an explosion.

A build up of gas vapour in a road tanker was blamed for the incident.

As a result of the rapid blaze, the man suffered a fractured skull and severe burns to his legs, arms and face.

He has lost most of his sense of taste and his hearing is now impaired.

Meanwhile, a second employee of the firm - which has regional centres in Eggborough and Higham - escaped with minor injuries.

Commenting on the case, Health and Safety Executive inspector Jacqueline Ferguson said: "RPM's failure to carry out a risk assessment and pre-entry testing for toxic or flammable vapours in the tanker was unacceptable."
