Widow of industrial disease victim secures payout
A woman whose husband died from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma has secured compensation of £250,000.
John Lambie died as a result of the condition, which affects around five times as many men as women, in November 2006, Spalding Today reports.
He was 62 when he passed away and was cared for up to his death by his widow Jayne Beesley.
Mr Lambie had been exposed to asbestos when he worked for New Century Group, a firm which Ms Beesley successfully sued.
During a recent hearing, Mr Justice Hamblen described the illness Mr Lambie suffered as "devastating" and said he would have lived for at least another 20 years if it had not been for the cancer.
He awarded £72,000 in damages for the suffering endured, £70,000 for future loss of earnings, £1,790 for funeral expenses, £3,000 for a holiday that had to be cancelled and £2,000 for the "intangible benefits" Ms Beesley lost when her husband died.
