Roofing boss fined £2k for endangering himself and workers
The boss of a group of roofers has been fined for putting himself and three fellow employees at risk of suffering injuries such as broken bones from an accident at work.
Mark McKernan - of the Greater Manchester town of Atherton, situated around six miles away from Wigan - pleaded guilty to breaching sections 6(3) and 10(3) of the Work at Height Regulations during a trial at Trafford Magistrates' Court following his prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Mr McKernan was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 in costs after it was found that he and three members of staff had been working on roofs last December with no safety equipment to protect them should they fall.
An inspector from the HSE also saw the boss and his employees throwing slates from the roofs into a skip placed at ground level just a few feet away from the pedestrian walkway.
