Pensioner suffers fall due to ice

news image A pensioner recently suffered a fall due to icy conditions in a crematorium car park.

Alfred Horn criticised the management of the venue for not clearing it in order to make it safe, the Portsmouth News reports.

The 81-year-old said: "A group of elderly people also fell down when I was there. Thankfully they managed to brush themselves off and stagger in. I don't know why they didn't clear it."

He had been attending a funeral at Portchester Crematorium when the accident happened.

Opened in 1958, the venue is located on the lower slopes of Portsdown Hill between Fareham and Portsmouth and it is controlled by a joint committee of councillors.

John Haskell, who is the clerk of the committee, said: "The snow that fell last week was unprecedented. But we only had to cancel two funerals with 80 more going ahead."

Conditions are now warmer across the UK, but forecasters predict there will be further snow and ice this winter.
