Nurse in line for payout after suffering back injury
A nurse who injured her back while at work has won the right to a payout, it has emerged.
According to reports in the Manchester Evening News (MEN), Donna Jane Egan was using a medical hoist at Manchester Royal Infirmary - which claims to treat over a million patients a year - when the incident occurred.
She was lifting a female patient into a bath when the machine suddenly stopped as its wheels hit the base of the bath.
The 39-year-old jarred her back as a result.
Earlier this year, a judge had dismissed her damages claim. However, that decision has now been reversed by appeal court judges.
Lady Justice Smith ruled that the Central Manchester and Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust was 50 per cent liable for the injury as it had failed to make "reasonably practicable" changes to the working system that would have prevented it.
According to the MEN, she is now in line for tens of thousands of pounds in compensation.
