More than 2,000 people die each year from mesothelioma, expert notes
In excess of 2,000 individuals lose their lives each year as a result of the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
This is according to Jason Addy, who is a campaigner for those who develop the health problem, Rochdale Online reports.
Although use of the hazardous insulating material is now banned, it remains in some older buildings and people are therefore still at risk of coming into contact with it.
Those who do and who subsequently go on to develop an illness as a result may be entitled to claim compensation.
Mr Addy suggested that the death toll connected with asbestos is rising.
He remarked: "Deaths occur as a result of exposure to asbestos many decades before, usually 20-40 years."
He added there is no cure for mesothelioma and it is "considered a very cruel disease".
So far, there is no way of telling which of those who have been exposed to asbestos will later develop medical complications.
