Manufacturer fined £13.5k for accident at work

news image A manufacturing company has been fined £13,500 for an accident at work which left a man with severely broken bones in his arm.

E-Leather Limited pleaded guilty to breaching clauses in both the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1998 during a case at Peterborough Magistrates' Court following an incident involving agency worker Robert Dunn in November 2009.

Mr Dunn had all three bones in his left arm broken and also tore cartilage in his knee when his limb was drawn into a fabric winding machine along with some material as he worked at the company's base in Peterborough, a city around 70 miles north of London.

The firm was also ordered to pay costs of £5,000 after an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that it had not placed adequate safety guards on a dangerous part of the machine.
