Manchester council 'awarded £4m in compensation in last two years'

news image New figures have revealed that Manchester council has been paid around £4 million in personal injury claims over the last two years.

The Manchester Evening News reports that the city's authorities have had to pay the majority of these costs for incidents such as accidents at work, as well as falls and asbestos-related illnesses.

Throughout the two-year period covered by the new data, the council - which is based in the centre of the north-west conurbation - settled some 765 claims, which resulted in an average damages package of just over £5,100 each.

The largest amount of compensation awarded was £175,170 to a former worker who had contracted Mesothelioma, but the majority of the claims were for less serious personal injuries.

Councillor Jim Battle, deputy leader of Manchester council, told the news source that the organisation will continue with its current strategy in handling compensation claims.
