Man may sue over accident at work that caused hand injuries

news image A man who was involved in an accident at work that resulted in him sustaining damage to his hand may seek compensation.

Allan Formoy was using his finger to free a mechanical jam in a machine that fed metal pins onto a grinding line when the incident occurred.

His hand became trapped in the device and the tip of one of his fingers was severed.

Recently, Federal Mogul - which employs a total of around 41,000 workers in 33 countries - admitted breaching health and safety rules.

An investigation had revealed that control measures intended to prevent such an occurrence were not in place.

Commenting on the case, inspector at the Health and Safety Executive Morag Irwin said: "Fitting guards is not a costly, time-consuming or difficult task and had they been in place this incident would not have occurred and a painful injury could have been avoided."

Firms must conduct suitable risk assessments, she added.
