Man may seek compensation over workplace fall

In August 2008, employees at Ultimate Industries were roofing a building that they had fabricated in a compound of a Toyota Motor Manufacturing site in Derbyshire.

One of the employees involved was fixing sheets to a ridge when he tumbled to the ground, which was around 3.7 metres beneath him.

As a result of the impact, he suffered damage to his back.

A subsequent investigation revealed that adequate safety measures were not in place when the task was being completed.

Commenting on the incident, Samantha Farrar, an inspector with the Health and Safety Executive - which serves to protect people from the risks that arise as a result of workplace activities - said operating on roofs can be dangerous.

She added: "This case shows the need for companies to ensure that work at height is properly planned and supervised and that appropriate equipment is provided."
