Man awarded £12k for loss of hearing

news image A man has won a compensation award of £12,000 due to a deafness and hearing problem he sustained at work.

Tony Greatorex, a former warehouse worker from Manchester, successfully claimed the award from his ex-employer Argos Direct after the firm - which has more than 700 stores nationwide - admitted culpability for his loss of hearing, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 46-year-old began working for the company in 2001 and fulfilled a role in one of its warehouses which involved taking pallets of new goods from the back of trucks and moving them for storage.

He was employed there until the warehouse shut in October 2009, but told the news publication that he began noticing a buzzing in his ear "towards the end of 2008".

Mr Greatorex explained that the noise in the working environment was "constant" and "mainly from a battery operated pump truck" which he had to operate to lift the pallets.

The damage to his ears means that he will be forced to wear hearing aids for the rest of his life.
