Landlords fined £6k for risking carbon monoxide poisoning

news image Two landlords have admitted potentially putting their tenants in a home in Bristol at risk of contracting carbon monoxide poisoning.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that couple Atulkulmar Ratilal Patel and Chetna Atulkulmar Patel had replaced a boiler without being trained to do so or listed on the Gas Safe register, which was implemented into British law in April 2009.

Consequently, Mr and Mrs Patel - of Brynmawr, Gwent - pleaded guilty to twice breaching health and safety regulations, as well as admitting that they also did not possess a landlord certificate during a case heard at Bristol Magistrates' Court.

They were fined a total of £6,500 for these breaches and were also ordered to pay costs of £1,600.

HSE inspector Ian Whitttles remarked that Mr and Mrs Patel should have "made sure that the boiler was properly installed and maintained by someone trained to do so".
