HSE issues personal injury warning for building sites

news image The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned that serious injuries such as broken bones can easily be sustained by children in accidents in workplaces such as building sites.

As the school holidays get underway across Britain, the HSE has urged parents to make sure their youngsters are fully aware of the risks of playing in such areas in order to avoid a repeat of figures seen over the course of 2008-09, when 25 children were injured and one died on construction sites.

Problems such as broken bones are common when young people venture into these hazardous working environments and the HSE - which was originally established in 1833 - has also stated that it is crucial for building companies to ensure that their complexes are regularly checked to ensure they are secure from public trespassers.

Philip White, HSE's chief inspector of construction, commented: "Construction sites are dangerous places for those who work on them day in day out, never mind the risks to children who simply see them as exciting playgrounds."
