Hearing loss sufferer secures compensation
A man who sustained damage to his hearing as a result of his workplace activities has been awarded compensation.
Albert Shaw was employed at a heavy industrial plant for 14 years without being supplied with proper ear protection, Wigan Today reports.
He worked as a plant operator for construction firm William Townson and Sons.
The 72-year-old decided to take legal action after developing difficulties with his hearing.
His family noticed that he was shouting on the phone and had the volume of the TV turned up very loud.
According to Mr Shaw, sometimes the noise at the plant was "incredible".
He added: "We were given no protection until 1982, when they gave us ear muffs and head protection."
In a new development, the grandfather has received £4,000 for his suffering.
Industrial deafness, which is also referred to as noise induced hearing loss, is a deterioration of a person's hearing over a period of time as a result of their work.
