Haulage firm fined £5k after workplace accident

news image A haulage company from Yorkshire has been fined £5,000 for its liability in an accident at work which left a man with brain and head injuries.

Joda Freight Limited pleaded guilty to breaching section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act in a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court after it was prosecuted following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

During the incident in question, which took place in August 2007, Nicholas Holmes was delivering a load of panel saws to the Saw Centre in Glasgow when one of the tools fell off his vehicle and struck him on the head.

Mr Holmes was left permanently brain damaged by the impact of the machinery and it was found that Joda - which was established in 1986 - did not have a properly efficient system of communication in place to ensure their drivers were informed about how to handle such products securely.
