Family of fall sufferer may sue

news image The family of a woman who suffered injuries in a series of falls may take legal action in an attempt to get compensation.

In the space of two days while in the care of Heartlands Hospital last year, Joyce Dempster fell over three times, the Birmingham Mail reports.

As a result of the last incident, the 84-year-old needed to have a hip operation.

She died two weeks later from bronchial pneumonia, but the damage she had suffered previously was cited as a factor.

During an inquest, it was found that a Falls Care Plan was not implemented by staff at the medical centre - which is located in Bordesley Green East - until after the third accident.

Ms Dempster's daughter, Diana Sutton, remarked: "We are considering legal action but we'll have to go away and discuss it with the family."

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the hospital noted that a review had been undertaken into the falls.

He claimed that no serious care concerns were reported and he passed on the organisation's condolences.
