Company fined £6k for workplace accident

news image A company has been fined £6,000 for its liability in a workplace accident which left an employee with a broken shoulder.

Moulton Bulb Company - an onion packing firm - has pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 4(1) of the Work at Height Regulations Act 2005 during a court case after it was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The regulatory body conducted an investigation into an incident in September 2009 when Richard Webster fell around three metres as he was covering onion boxes with plastic sheeting at the company's site in the Lincolnshire market town of Spalding.

It was found that Mr Webster fell from a ladder as he went about his work and consequently suffered a broken shoulder which prevented him from working for one month.

Moulton Bulb Company was therefore fined £6,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,188.

HSE inspector Jo Anderson commented: "I'm satisfied the company has learned from this incident."
