Company directors fined GBP2k for workplace accident
Two directors of a company based in Yorkshire have been fined a total of GBP2,001 for their liability in a workplace accident which saw a man lose the ends of two of his fingers.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that Dennis Brunt and Peter Critchard - the former owners of Lupton Fabrications, which has now ceased trading - had breached regulation 11 (1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
Both men - who now run a firm named Steelsafe- were found guilty of the offence following a trial at Leeds Magistrates Court and were ordered to pay a fine of GBP2,001 and GBP250 in costs.
The HSE's inquiries were brought about after an incident in April 2009 when an unnamed worker had his fingers crushed because the light curtains - which are used to protect employees from the closing tools of a metal press which can stop during its cycle - were not in full working order.
