Companies fined combined £125k for workplace accident
Two construction firms have been ordered to pay fines of £50,000 and £75,000 for a workplace accident which left an employee with life-changing injuries.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Laing O'Rourke Construction Limited and Expanded Structures following the incident in October 2006 which caused a worker severe injuries to his head and body.
Steve McColgan fell 21 m to the ground when part of an unsupported working platform broke away as he stood on it.
During a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, both companies pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and, consequently, Laing O'Rourke - which is the UK's largest privately-owned construction company - had to pay £50,000 and Expanded Structures £75,000 for their shared liability.
HSE inspector Victoria Wise commented after the case that the firms "failed in their duty of care to Mr McColgan, who was lucky to survive the fall".
She added that it is imperative for work at height to be subject to "a high degree of overall management and control".
