Worker receives payout after developing arm condition
A council worker has been awarded compensation after developing a condition known as hand arm vibration syndrome (Havs).
Potentially very serious if ignored, Havs affects the nerves, blood vessels and muscles and occurs as a result of using hand-held powered work equipment.
Joseph Beale, who is employed by Bridgend county borough council, secured a payout of £3,000 after taking legal action over his suffering.
Meanwhile, a request made under the Freedom of Information Act has revealed that a total of more than 40 staff at the local authority have developed the condition.
Mr Beale began suffering from it in 2004 after working for the council for over ten years.
In his role, he was responsible for using a range of gardening tools, such as hedge cutters, mowers and strimmers.
He said: "Despite having worked with vibrating tools for over ten years the council did not warn me about the possible dangers and now I have developed a disease that I did not even know existed."
