Woman seeks compensation over trauma suffered at work

news image A woman has launched legal proceedings in a bid to secure compensation after suffering a traumatic incident at work.

Diana Smith was a member of a security team involved in restraining teenager Gareth Myatt at the Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre - which is located in Willoughby near Rugby.

In April 2004, he became the first child to die while being restrained in custody.

Ms Smith is claiming damages from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for the suffering this caused her.

According to the worker, the technique used to contain the youngster was "inherently dangerous".

She claims that the MoJ should have foreseen the dangers involved and the possible risk of injury to staff members who had to witness such an incident.

Her legal team have taken the issue to London's Civil Appeal Court, where MoJ lawyers are set defend their case on the grounds that the restraining technique was "closely scrutinised".
