Road surfaces result in over £300k compensation payments in Cumbria

news image Accidents and injuries in Cumbria caused by faults in road surfaces have resulted in citizens getting compensation totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds.

This is according to figures cited by the News & Star, which revealed that the local authority has issued £303,000 to those affected by such highway problems.

The publication, which obtained its statistics through the Freedom of Information Act, noted that Cumbria County Council's highways hotline took 865 phone calls from people in January, with most referring to potholes.

It also revealed that local authorities in the north of England as a whole paid out £4 million for damages caused by road and pavement defects between 2004 and 2009.

There has been a rise in the number of people suffering accidents and injuries as a result of highway surface issues over the last few months.

This is a result of the icy conditions which have been affecting the country since December.
