North-east hospitals pay out £36m as a result of clinical negligence

news image Hospitals located in the north-east of England paid out almost £36 million in compensation cases over the course of 2007, it has been revealed.

According to statistics released under the Freedom of Information Act and cited in the Sunday Sun, such medical institutions paid out a total of £35,660,422 last year.

Commenting on the figures, Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "This is a double failure by NHS trusts. They have a responsibility to care for the sick and to spend taxpayers' money carefully."

Meanwhile, a Department of Health spokesman stated that the NHS deals with one million patients every 36 hours and the "vast majority" receive safe care.

In related news, figures obtained by the Daily Post last month showed that health trusts in north Wales shelled out £53 million in 2007 as a result of clinical negligence cases.
