Firm fined £40k following worker injuries

news image A company has been hit with a fine of £40,000 after three of its workers were injured.

The incident occurred in July 2006 when the employees entered a lift, which then descended in an uncontrollable way.

One of the men suffered a broken leg, while another sustained ankle injuries and the third was affected by compression injuries.

During a recent hearing at Trafford magistrates' court, Procter and Gamble Product Supply UK - which is part of an international organisation employing more than 38,000 staff - pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws.

As well as incurring the fine, it was ordered to pay costs of £2,748.

"This incident should serve as a lesson to all companies to ensure that they have proper maintenance regimes to avoid similar incidents in the future," stated Health and Safety Executive inspector Richard Clarke.

He added that the accident was "wholly unavoidable" had a proper system of maintenance been in place.
