Farm worker secures payout after losing fingers in accident
A Polish farm worker has been awarded compensation following an accident in which he suffered the loss of three fingers.
Pawel Piasecki was cutting wood at a farm in the small north Yorkshire village of Swinithwaite in September last year when the incident occurred.
The 20-year-old was attempting to lubricate the unguarded blade of a saw while it was still moving, the Northern Echo reports.
He suffered the loss of the middle finger of his left hand as well as part of his ring finger.
In a new development, Mr Piasecki has secured undisclosed damages from the insurance company of the farm's owners.
Prosecuting on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Charlie Callis said: "This young man was shown how to use this machine and then very much left to get on with it. He believed he was meant to lubricate the blade while it was moving."
The HSE aims to protect people from risks that arise to people's health and safety as a result of work activities.
