Family of man who died from blood clot to seek compensation

news image The family of a man who died from a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has revealed it is to take legal action.

According to a report in the Bath Chronicle, Gerald Brooks' relations have said they will seek compensation over his death.

The 57-year-old former forklift truck driver lost his life in July 2006 as a result of a DVT - which occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein - after he suffered a broken ankle at work.

As he was recovering, the clot formed in his leg and travelled to his lung.

During a recent inquest, it was ruled that doctors at Bath's Royal United Hospital failed to follow procedures and delays in the treatment received by Mr Brooks constituted neglect.

According to the jury, he should have been given a blood-thinning drug to prevent the clot forming sooner as he was suffering from symptoms of thrombosis.

His widow, Maureen, said: "I'm still very angry. Gerald could have and should have been treated earlier and the lack of that treatment has left me without my husband and my son without a father."
