Brain damaged teen secures £5m payout

news image A teenager who was left brain damaged as a result of mistakes made during his birth has been awarded a payout of over £5 million.

The compensation was secured in an out-of-court settlement with the North East Strategic Heath Authority, one of ten such authorities in England.

Chad Willis was starved of oxygen while being delivered at North Tees General Hospital in 1990.

As a result, he developed cerebral palsy, a condition which affects physical coordination and movement.

According to Mr Willis' legal team, his injuries occurred as a result of the failure of medical staff to respond to signs of foetal distress prior to his delivery.

Approving the settlement at the high court in London, Mr Justice Sweeney commended the teenager's family.

He said: "It's quite humbling to see the extent of the love and care you have all given to Chad, who suffers many problems through no fault of his own, which he has struggled nobly and bravely to overcome," the BBC reports.
