Don’t Step into the Light! Contractor’s Near Fatal Fall through Skylight

Don’t Step into the Light! Near Fatal Skylight Fall

A Bedfordshire contractor was left fighting for his life after falling through a roof at work.

The man was working on a roof for manufacturing company Lockheed Martin UK Ampthill in January 2012 when the accident at work happened. He fell through a skylight whilst doing his work and suffered severe injuries from the fall. He received emergency treatment which saved his life.

Lockheed Martin UK Ampthill Limited pleaded guilty in court, admitting to breaching the Work at Height Regulations. As a result the manufacturing company, which employs more than 3,000 people in the UK across 21 sites, was hit with a hefty fine. In addition to a £10,000 fine Lockheed Martin UK Ampthill Limited was ordered by Luton Magistrates’ Court to pay a £210 victim surcharge and over £7,300 in costs.

Falling through a skylight is not uncommon. Sadly falling through a fragile roof light is an accident which occurs frequently and often has tragic consequences. Falling through fragile roof surfaces is one of the most frequent causes of serious injuries in the workplace.

Almost 30% of deaths caused by accidents at work in the UK are falls from height. To prevent a potentially fatal accident falling through a roof, be aware of the following areas which might be fragile and present a risk to you when carrying out roof work:

  • Rotted chipboards;
  • Corroded metal sheets;
  • Glass or wired glass;
  • Slates and tiles;
  • Fibre-cement surfaces which haven’t been reinforced;
  • Liner panels on built-up sheeted roofs;
  • And of course roof lights, especially old ones.

If you work at height on rooftops it is wise to use proprietary covers to decrease the risk of falling through a fragile surface. Proprietary covers can be used as a both a temporary or permanent installation, and they have the potential to save lives.
