Engineer Suffers Loss of Limb as 700kg Metal Sheet Slices Off Toes

Engineer Suffers Loss of Limb as Metal Sheet Severs Toes

Engineer Anton Hunter lost three toes on 17th February 2014 following an accident at work.

The incident occurred on site as the 20-year-old worker was helping a colleague to unload fabricated steel sheets from a delivery vehicle. One of the sheets got dislodged from a magnet and landed on the G&P Machine Shop Ltd Engineer’s feet leaving him disabled.

G&P Machine Shop had hired a magnet which wasn’t suitable for securing such heavy sheets. The magnet came with instructions that the maximum weight should have been 400kg.

The warning signs were there. A smaller metal sheet had already fallen from where it was once secured by the magnet, but workers continued to unload the larger sheets. Believing a cloth around the magnet was at fault, they removed the cloth and successfully unloaded one 700kg sheet before disaster struck.

The second 700kg metal sheet slipped from the magnet and landed on Mr Hunter. His right foot had three toes sliced off. All the toes on his left foot were fractured and he later suffered another Loss of Limb when, following surgery, his big toe shifted and as a result his second toe needed to be amputated.

Although still working on his walking skills Mr Hunter has been able to return to work in a limited capacity. Health and Safety Inspector Rob Hassell said, “Anton Hunter has suffered a debilitating injury that may impair his ability to walk for the foreseeable future. The incident could have been prevented if G&P Machine Shop had carried out suitable checks to ensure the lift was within the operating capacities of the magnet.”

The engineering firm from Kent admitted a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and was fined £16,000 and ordered to pay £1,036 because the Maidstone Magistrates’ Court found the firm guilty of not checking the magnet was right for the job.
