A serious arm injury sustained in an accident at work may cause the injured workman to claim compensation for his injuries and for lost earnings.
The unnamed 28-year-old man suffered a broken right arm and soft tissue injury to his wrist when his arm got stuck in a conveyor belt at business premises owned by Hawkeswood Metal Recycling in Birmingham.
When the accident happened in 2010, the worker was trying to retrieve a piece of scrap metal that had become trapped in the machine when his glove got caught, dragging his arm into the moving parts of the machine.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) subsequently established that his employer had not fitted a guard on the conveyor and, and due to the severity of his injuries, the injured workman could not return to his job for nine months.
Ed Fryer of the HSE said, "There is no excuse for companies to operate without protecting employees from dangerous parts of machinery."
