Claire Millward took legal action against Northampton General Hospital when it emerged she had undergone an unnecessary operation after being diagnosed with cervical cancer.
The 37-year-old went under the knife for a hysterectomy - ending her plans to have a big family - but was later told that her smear tests had not been properly read by hospital staff and, in fact, she could have been treated without an operation.
Ms Millward only found out about this mistake when she went for a routine smear test with her surgeon and told the BBC she "burst into tears" upon being informed of this news.
"Basically the negligence of some people has had a dramatic effect on my life. I want to ensure that no-one else has to go through this," she added.
