Finger amputation could lead to damages award

Finger amputation could lead to damages award 2650

Compensation could be pursued by a man after an accident at work resulted in part of one of his fingers being amputated.

Norbert Pietrzkiewicz lost around half of the little digit on his right hand during an incident while he worked at premises owned by his employer Total Installations on Aldershot last February.

At the time of the accident, Mr Pietrzkiewicz was reducing the thickness of pieces of wood at the company's factory with a cutting block when his hand was drawn into the equipment.

A subsequent investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found Total Installations had failed to make sure adequate safeguards were set up in order to stop employees coming into contact with the machine's rotating components.

The firm has been fined for this breach and Mr Pietrzkiewicz could now opt to pursue damages for his ordeal.

Alec Ryan, inspector at the HSE, commented: "If the company had carried out an adequate risk assessment of the work, its employees would not have been put at risk."
