Damages to be sought for broken arm?

A broken arm sustained during an accident at work may result in a man launching a compensation claim against his employer.

The unnamed worker fractured his arm when he fell a distance of around 1.4 metres from wooden staging set up around a boat he was refurbishing at premises owned by Clare Lallow on the Isle of Wight in August last year.

At the time of this incident, the man was attempting to pick up a sanding and polishing machine when he fell and an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) established the surface he was standing on did not include any measures to prevent falls.

Due to the severity of his injury, the employee had to take five months off work and may therefore seek damages.

Craig Varian, inspector at the HSE, commented: "The company's failings left an individual injured for a significant period of time. Yet the incident was avoidable."
