Study: Plymouth most cycle-friendly area in UK

Plymouth is the UK destination where cycling accidents are least common, new research has indicated.

According to a study conducted by Virgin Money, the southern city is the most cycle-friendly place in the country based on a range of factors such as the number of injuries and deaths resulting from collisions there.

This survey - which ranked the top 60 urban areas in Britain for cyclists - placed Norwich second followed by Bristol, with St Helens in fourth and Glasgow and Huddersfield sharing fifth spot.

Bringing up the rear in 60th position was Cambridge, while London - despite the influence of Boris Johnson's bike hire scheme - was placed 50th in the rankings.

However, Graeme Tones of Virgin Money observed that all towns and cities figuring in the top 60 can be proud of their performance.

"Reducing the level of accidents and serious injuries requires responsibility from cyclists, care from drivers and the desire from towns and cities to make it easy and safe for people to get on their bikes," he added.
