Severe burns to lead to compensation pursuit?

Serious burns sustained during an accident at work could result in a man seeking personal injury compensation.

The unnamed agency employee suffered 17 per cent burns to his body when he came into contact with hot ash while working at an incineration depot in Deptford in December 2009.

At the time of the incident, the individual was removing excess ash from a filtration hopper for his employer Veolia Environmental Services - a firm with 12,000 employees in the UK - when some of the substance fell on top of him.

He was consequently hospitalised for nearly a month due to the severity of his burns and a subsequent investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Veolia had not provided him with sufficient supervision or training for this task.

Kerry Williams of the HSE commented: "The victim was a vulnerable worker who should have been protected whilst working."
