Pensioner launches compensation claim for knee injury

A pensioner has launched a compensation claim after he sustained a serious knee injury during an accident in a public place.

Jim Hegarty, a 71-year-old resident of South Shields, tripped over a misplaced paving slab in Horsley Hill Road in April last year and cracked his knee in the fall, according to the Shields Gazette.

Subsequently, Mr Hegarty now suffers with arthritis in the joint and cannot walk properly.

His wife Anne, who was walking with her husband at the time of his fall, told the news source the accident has seriously affected Mr Hegarty.

"He's not been the same since, he's just a frail old man now. He used to be very active and he was always in the garden, but he's lost his confidence," she noted.

The couple are therefore now seeking damages from South Tyneside Council for his ordeal, with Mrs Hegarty also requesting an apology from the local authority.
