Mental health issues 'costing businesses £30bn annually'

Issues such as stress at work are costing businesses across the UK approximately £30 billion every year, new research has revealed.

According to a study conducted by Acas, around one in every six professionals in Britain will be suffering with mental health problems like anxiety or depression at any given time.

The sickness absence this causes among workers leads to companies losing out on billions of pounds annually due to lower productivity.

However, the survey indicated that by making a few simple changes to they way in which they manage these health problems, bosses could reduce this outlay by around 33 per cent.

John Taylor, chief executive of Acas, said the primary stumbling block preventing this from happening is that a lot of managers shy away from dealing with mental illness because it is seen as an extremely sensitive subject.

"Going forward we all need to develop a new way of looking at mental health and break down the taboo," he added.
