Workplace Accident Caused Serious Hand Injury

Hand injury to lead to compensation claim 2559

An unnamed 27-year-old lost three fingers on his left hand in an accident at work when his left hand came into contact with a rotating saw.

The accident happened at Bolton-based pallet firm Frank Hill in December 2010.

At the time of the accident the man was holding a large piece of wood while one of his colleagues cut through it when the blade then caught his hand, causing serious hand injuries.

A work accident investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) established that his employer had failed to fit a sufficient guard on the machine, as well as not providing the worker with adequate training in how to use it properly.

Sarah Taylor, inspector at the HSE commented, "Sadly, workplace accidents like this are still all too common in the manufacturing industry. We will continue to prosecute firms that put the safety of their staff at risk."
