Govt 'must protect genuine whiplash claims'

Genuine whiplash claims must be protected by the government if proposed reforms to legislation relating to the car insurance industry go through.

That is according to John Wotton - president of The Law Society, the representative body for solicitors in England and Wales - who has urged the coalition to make sure it does not make real whiplash compensation claims impossible.

Insurance companies have recently called on the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to implement stricter measures to prevent fraud.

Indeed, government figures show that even though the number of road traffic accidents taking place in Britain has fallen by 23 per cent since 2007, the volume of compensation claims being made has gone up by 70 per cent.

This has resulted in firms urging the administration to take action sooner rather than later as premiums continue to rise sharply.

However, Mr Wotton insisted it is unlikely that "simply giving insurers what they are asking for will reduce premiums".
