Pensioner awarded £5k following trip

Compensation of £5,000 has been awarded to a pensioner who sustained a horrific hand injury during an accident in a public place.

According to the Hastings Observer, 73-year-old Irene Saville has been granted this four-figure sum from East Sussex County Council following a county court hearing into an incident that took place in 2007.

Ms Saville fell over on an uneven area of the pavement outside her home in Ore while going for a walk with her granddaughter and great-granddaughter and suffered injuries to both her hands.

"One of the fingers of my left hand was nearly hanging off. It was quite bad and I had to have six months of physiotherapy. I also grazed my neck," she told the news source.

The council has decided to appeal this award on the basis that its negligence did not cause the incident, but Ms Saville added that the judge presiding over the case was insistent the pavement was in a poor state.
