NHS staff 'claim £20m damages annually'

An incident of slipping and tripping in a hospital has resulted in a nurse being awarded nearly £4,000 in personal injury damages, it has emerged.

According to the Daily Mail, the medical professional fell over on a piece of potato on their ward and was subsequently granted some £3,980 in compensation from the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust.

Meanwhile, £2,250 was granted to a worker at the Sherwood Forest NHS Trust for a repetitive strain injury sustained in the line of duty, with another employee there being awarded £875 for a cut to their thumb.

Following a freedom of information request from the news source, it was revealed that the NHS Litigation Authority currently awards around £20 million to members of staff annually due to injuries sustained during accidents at work.

In 2011, in excess of 3,200 claims were made by NHS employees, which represents a rise on the figure of 2,535 recorded one year earlier.
