Union calls for safety improvements on farms 2444

More action needs to be taken in order to reduce the number of accidents at work taking place in the agricultural sector.

That is according to trade union Unite, which has called on the government to be more proactive in its approach to ensuring health and safety is prioritised in this employment sector.

At present, 20 per cent of all deaths in British workplaces occur on farmland and the body - which has 1.5 million members - has insisted that the government and the National Union of Farmers need to work together to drive this figure down.

Cath Speight, national officer at Unite, observed: "Other high-risk industries, particularly construction, have seen death and accident rates fall over the years. But this has not happened in agriculture for many years."

Ms Speight went on to say that more investigations are needed to enhance the level of health and safety on farms.
