The unnamed female suffered a fractured spine when she fell down a lift shaft at a branch of homeware store the Range in Colchester last month and has been kept in at Colchester General Hospital since, the Chelmsford Weekly News reports.
According to the news source, the woman was pushing her ten-month-old son in a trolley when a fault in the lift's mechanism caused it to stop too soon, leading her to step out and fall down the shaft.
Her young child also sustained serious bruising but was discharged from hospital on the same day and the mother's fiance has said a claim for damages is now underway, although the retailer has not yet accepted liability.
"It has absolutely devastated our family. She keeps having flashbacks and this is going to leave her scarred," he noted.
