The unnamed man suffered life-threatening injuries when he struck a high voltage electric cable while participating in construction work on the Crossrail railway service in London in February 2008.
At the time of the incident, the 63-year-old was operating a hydraulic breaker for Fugro Engineering Services - a company established in 2003 and employs more than 130 members of staff - in order to create an inspection pit for the project.
He then struck the live cable and sustained 60 per cent burns and an investigation conducted by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) established that the man had not been given proper guidance in safe digging techniques in dangerous areas.
Lisa Chappell of the HSE commented: "Had Fugro Engineering Services provided the correct training, supervision and a safe system of work … this serious incident could have been avoided."
