Broken bones to lead to compensation pursuit?

Broken bones suffered during an accident at work may result in an employee pursuing a claim for compensation.

An unnamed 38-year-old man sustained fractures to two vertebrae when he fell a distance of around nine metres while working for M-tech Engineering on a project to install a steel staircase at premises in Nottingham in April 2009.

The professional was hurt when he fell from a mobile tower scaffold and an investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the equipment was not constructed following industry guidelines or the manufacturers' instructions.

Kevin Wilson of the HSE commented: "It was only chance that his injuries were not more severe as he fortuitously landed on a surface that absorbed the energy of his fall."

This comes after Barry Walton suffered broken ribs and damage to his leg and shoulder in a 2.5-metre fall while he worked for processing firm Vion Foods in 2010.
